The Hawaii State Department has approved the sale of Viagra in Hawaii and has recommended the use of the drug to treat men suffering from erectile dysfunction. The state has taken action to address sexual dysfunction.
The Department’s drug policy is currently being reviewed, with Pfizer and Teva Pharmaceuticals saying they have not approved Viagra use in Hawaii or the state.
“The decision to use the Viagra drug for a number of purposes is not a decision on the safety or efficacy of the drug,” said state Department of Health Director Mark Hooper.
“We are making progress in this process and will be updating our policy for the duration of this week.”
Pfizer said it is taking steps to address sexual dysfunction in Hawaii.
“We’re making progress in the process to ensure that the use of this drug is safe and effective,” said Pfizer’s vice president of worldwide marketing and distribution, Thomas D’Amelio.
“We are working to ensure that the drug is used under the guidance of the Food and Drug Administration,” said Pfizer’s Chief Financial Officer, David R. Thompson.
“While we are confident that Pfizer will continue to make substantial progress in addressing sexual dysfunction, we remain concerned about the potential for adverse health effects, and the potential impact on sexual function,” said Thompson.
Viagra and the other drugs approved by the Food and Drug Administration were first approved to treat erectile dysfunction in 1998.
The drug is being marketed under the brand name Sildenafil, which is available in 50mg tablets and 100mg pills.
Viagra is also used to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension (high blood pressure in the arteries that supply blood to the lungs).
Viagra is sold under the brand name Revatio.
The drug is also being studied as a treatment for erectile dysfunction in women, with trials showing that women taking the drug have improved erections when they are sexually stimulated.
Viagra is available as 100mg pills, while Revatio is available in 50mg pills.
The drugs are available in several strengths: 100mg, 100mg, 150mg, and 200mg tablets. Viagra has been available under the brand name Revatio for several years.
Pfizer said the drug can help men who take nitrates to treat angina, a serious heart condition.
A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2015 found that patients with diabetes who were treated with sildenafil (the generic name for Viagra) showed improvements in blood pressure, heart rate and angina severity.
Patients on both the branded and generic drugs may experience side effects, such as headache, facial flushing and indigestion.
Viagra was approved for sale in the state last week but has not been officially sold.
It is not available to purchase in Hawaii. Pfizer said it is reviewing the matter.
In December 2016, Pfizer agreed to pay $1.6 billion to resolve allegations that it marketed the drug without a valid prescription.
